hey everyone ...i hope you all had a wonderful T.A day.
on tuesday we started unit 2 ,TRANSFORMATIONS.
we did translations...translations are vertical and horizontal movements or shifts using basic shape.
vertical translations :
y=f(x)+k or f(x)-k if the value of k is negative the entire graph shifts down and if it is positive the graph shifts up.
horizontal translations:
y=f(x-h) or f(x+h) if the value of h is positive the entire graph shifts left and if h is negative the graph shifts right.
then we did some graphing , we graphed quadratic functions ,cubic functions and trig. finctions.
that's all we did on tuesday.
Today ,on thursday ,we did stretches and compressions.
vertical stretches and compressions :
y=af(x) the graph stretches vertically by the factor of "a" units.(a>1)
y=1/a f(x) the graph compresses vertically by the factor of "a" units. (a<1)
only the y values are affected in a vertical compress or stretch. The value of x does not change.
(x,y) = (x,a.y)
horizontal stretches and compressions:
y=f(bx) the graph compresses horizontally by the factor of "a" units.
y=f(1/bx) the graph stretches horizontally by the factor of ''a" units.
In horizontal stretch or compression only x values are affected. The y value does not change.
we have our first unit test tomorrow ,so, be ready and best of luck !
